Course Description: 

BOT 110 is a document production course using word processing software.  Students will learn the basic functions of a word processing application while creating business documents. Assignments include letters, memos, reports, tables, announcements, newsletters, mail merge, graphics, electronic messaging, Internet research, and projects designed to provide workplace experiences.

 

Course Objectives:  At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Create and format documents from rough-draft copy.
  2. Format business letters, memos, reports and tables.
  3. Apply basic design skills to creating newsletters and announcements.
  4. Create, edit, and format documents for “mailable” copy.
  5. Edit copy using proofreader’s marks.
  6. Compose “business” emails.
  7. Conduct Internet research for projects.
  8. Prepare a career/job research portfolio and participate in professional development activities

Getting Started:

Login to blackboard.miracosta.edu with your SURF ID to review the course announcements, project assignments, and lectures.

 

Be sure to read the lecture for each assignment to be sure you fully understand the objectives and goals of the assignments.  If you have any questions, contact your instructor immediately.

 

Flex Schedule:  In the orientation packet you will find a weekly guidesheet for the semester.  Use this guidesheet to set up your flexible work schedule.  The assignment sheet has the suggested weekly assignments listed.

 

Submitting Assignments:

This is a self-paced online course that allows you to work in the BOT Model Office, 4803B OC, or online.  Students are responsible for completing and submitting all assignments as listed in the course syllabus.  Assignments reviewed and graded in the BOT Model Office will get immediate feedback and grading.  Weekly assignments submitted through email will be reviewed and graded within five (5) days. All assignments submitted through email must be identified in the subject line with your last name and the assignment name or number as directed in the syllabus, for example:  Striebel Project 1.

 

 To expedite responses to questions, key the word QUESTION in the subject line of the email, and you will receive a response within 24-48 hours.

 

The Blackboard site contains data files, all assignments, announcements, lectures, special instructions or notes for assignments, discussion questions, and assignment grades. 

 

Even though this is a self-paced course and students can select a flexible schedule for completing assignments, students must show steady progress through the semester by viewing the program orientation, submitting the student contact form, submitting weekly assignments, and maintaining contact with the instructor.  Students will be dropped for lack of successful progress.  A suggested timeline for completing assignments is given in the syllabus.  Students are encouraged to follow the timeline or work ahead as a guide to successful completion of the course. 

 

Grading:

Production assignments will be evaluated as “mailable” or “unmailable.”  Individual assignment values are listed in the course assignment sheet.  If a document contains a minor error that can be easily corrected, half the mailable value will be given for the assignment.  Criteria for mailable documents are:

            selection of the correct document and format for the message

            error-free copy including correct spelling of names and proper nouns

            correct grammar and punctuation

            compliance with all assignments instructions or directions
