COURSE OBJECTIVES AND STRUCTURE:
This course is taught mainly in Spanish. Review of Spanish grammar, rules of orthography, accentuation and punctuation. Writing of complex sentences, essays and compositions. Exposure to cultural and civilization studies in the literature produced in the language. Acquisition and use of vocabulary through reading comprehension activities and oral presentations by groups of students and/or by individuals.
There will be various readings of Spanish and Latin American prose and poetry by "Hispanistas", the topics will be diverse (i.e. customs, politics, traditions, daily life).
Some of the readings will be individual assignments as homework, in which the student will work with the vocabulary, content, and meaning. Group discussions and individual and/or group (informative) presentations will be components of this class.
Once a week, students and instructor will spend one class period in the International Language Resource Center (room 4701), to review audio-visual materials so that students will have the opportunity to participate in activities related to the learning of the Spanish language and culture.
The material covered in class will be tested regularly with quizzes and in-class writings; 3-4 tests; and a final exam. The examinations may include a combination of grammar, vocabulary and/or content of the readings and presentations. There will be a final project which will be discussed in detail early in the semester.
THROUGHOUT THE COURSE THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO:
• communicate mainly in Spanish.
• do the corresponding assignments (written homework, readings, group and individual presentations, etc.) and to turn them in to the instructor at the beginning of the class. (No late assignments will be accepted for grade).
• arrive and attend class and laboratory punctually and regularly.
• be ready to participate actively in all class activities.
• attend a minimum of six hours the laboratory during the open lab hours.
• take all the examinations on the scheduled dates. NOTE: If an emergency occurs on an exam day please contact the instructor of this class immediately.
• be courteous to your classmates and your instructor during the class time by deactivating electronic devices such as: beepers, alarm watches, cellular phones, organizers, hair dryers, compact disc players, game boys. . .
NOTE! Homework assignments and attendance/ participation account for approximately 1/3 (one third) of the student's final grade. For example: Student A averaged 90% and above on her examinations, however, she was lax on homework and attendance and her final grade fell to the 70% range. OOOOPS!?!?! On the other hand, Student B received an average of 70% on his examinations; however, he is very diligent on all the assigned work and had attended very regularly. This student's final grade resulted in the high 80% range. HMMMMMM?!?!?
MISSED TESTS:
No make-up tests for any reason. At the end of the semester your lowest test score will be dropped.
ATTENDANCE:
It is vital for a language student to show up when class meets--and this one is not an exception. Any student who has three unexcused class meetings, by the end of the semester, will be dropped one letter grade. Also, the student who has four or more absences (meetings) will be dropped from the class. Students who do not receive enough formal instruction fail to meet the criterion that is critical and vital for learning a foreign language; therefore, THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!
Arriving late or leaving early in this class is not acceptable without prior notification to the instructor. (Chronic tardiness will affect the student's status in the class as well). If you cannot comply with this policy, please do not take this class.
NOTE! The instructor checks roll every class meeting.
CHEATING PENALTIES:
•may range from an "F" on an examination to removal from the classroom and/or from MiraCosta College.
