COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To learn and practice the basic skills of Italian in a clear and logical manner by listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, the conversational aspect of Italian is emphasized and is a vital part of this class.
By the end of the course the student will be able to write sentences, paragraphs and compositions; to communicate in Italian at the elementary level; to differentiate between English and Italian structures; to read elementary Italian with accuracy and comprehension; and to acquire an understanding of the Italian-speaking world, i.e., culture, tradition, history, politics, etc.
COURSE STRUCTURE:
The class is a continuation of Italian 101 and corresponds to the first three years of High School Italian. Acceptable for Credit at CSU and UC Systems.
Emphasis will be on more complex sentence structure according to the specific syntax of the language. Vocabulary, idioms, more elaborate dialogues and the reading in prose and/or verse of suitable authors will be stressed.
The class covers lessons (lezioni) (*6) 7 through 13. There will be a test (esame) at the end of every lezione, some (unannounced) quizzes, a mid-term exam and a final exam.
Once a week, students and instructor will spend one class period (50 minutes) in the International Language Resource Center (room 4701), to review audio-visual materials so that students will have the opportunity to participate in activities related to the learning of the Italian language.
To reinforce the basic skills of Italian, there will be a variety of activities assigned as homework (compito) during the semester.
*Note: Attendance to the International Language Resource Centers (room 4701 in Oceanside, and 508 in San Elijo) is NOT mandatory, but it is strongly recommended to all language courses students to review and practice with the materials available. There are many Open Lab Hours available during the week.
The COMPLETED exercises from the Workbook and assigned work from the Language Manual is required, and will be collected on test days.
*During the semester, the student will present (one/two times) to the class and/or the instructor relevant information about her (him)self in Italian; i.e. daily routine, work, hobbies, spare time, pets.
*At the end of the semester, the student will deliver an oral presentation to the class in Italian. This activity should include a cultural note (or an advertisement) from the Italian communities.
* More details will be given later in the semester.
THROUGHOUT THE COURSE THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO:
• read the assigned grammar/ notes, before coming to class.
• do the assignments and to turn them in to the instructor at the beginning of the class.
(No late assignments will be accepted for grade) - No Exceptions!-
• arrive and attend class punctually.
• do the assigned exercises in the Workbook / Manual.
• be ready to participate in all class activities.
• take all the examinations on the scheduled dates. (*If an emergency occurs on an exam day, please contact the instructor of this class ASAP!)
• be courteous to your classmates and your instructor during the class time by deactivating electronic devices such as: beepers, alarm watches, cellular phones, organizers, hair dryers, compact disc players, game boys, IPod’s. . .
NOTE! Homework assignments, the exercises in the workbook/ manual and attendance/participation account for 1/3 (one third) of the student's final grade. For example: Student A averaged 90% and above on her examinations, however, she was lax on homework and attendance and her final grade fell to the 70% range. OOOOPS!?!?! On the other hand, Student B received an average of 70% on his examinations; however, he is very diligent on all the assigned work and had attended very regularly. This student's final grade resulted in the high 80% range. HMMMMMM?!?!?
MISSED TESTS:
No make-up tests for any reason. At the end of the semester your lowest test score will be dropped.
ATTENDANCE:
It is vital for a language student to show up when class meets--and this one is not an exception. Any student, who has two unexcused classes (one week), by the end of the semester, will be dropped one letter grade. Also, the student who has four absences (two weeks) will be dropped from the class. Students who do not receive enough formal instruction fail to meet the criteria that are critical and vital for learning a foreign language; therefore, THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!
ARRIVING LATE OR LEAVING EARLY IN THIS CLASS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTIFICATION TO THE INSTRUCTOR. (Chronic tardiness will affect the student's status in the class as well). If you cannot comply with this policy, please do not take this class.
NOTE! The instructor checks roll every class meeting.

•may range from an "F" on an examination to removal from the classroom and/or from MiraCosta College.
