The bulk of my work thus far has been the end result of various school assignments. However, I am always trying to inject a bit of my own personality into the things I do, even the lowly color wheel. My artistic expression parallels my education in it's growth ans expantion. I equally enjoy sculpting, painting and performance art, often melding the three. I enjoy using humor, sarcasm and blunt commentary to mask personal tragedy. I am inspired by Rodney Graham, Richard Serra and Frida Khalo. Balancing concept and asthetics is key in all my work. I could just make something beautiful, but I would be robbing myself and the viewer of viceral and intellectual engagement. Creating art isn't easy, it requires intense labor, mental fortitude and above all, a great sense of humor. I can see how many artists have been driven to drink and become self destructive. Through the course of my artistic and academic career I will become who I am. I look forward to the journey and it's many rewards.

Who I am and what I do today was profoundly shaped by my childhood. My family is from Germany, yet I was born in the United States. I have moved more times than I care to remember, but I care nonetheless. My homes were always on the fringes of civilization. The ability to entertain ones self came to be a valuable commodity in a world of isolation and constant upheaval. I read many books, became observant and reveled in my intimacy with the land and it's creatures. I loved to laugh at everything. Although I enjoy the company of people, I am constantly uncomfortable and unsure. To mask this I use humor and sarcasm to get by. I am partial to dressing in a giant pink bunny suit and cavorting around with friends. This makes me appear clever and outgoing. I am quite often the opposite of how I appear. I am sure this will sustain me through graduate school, a point in time I anxiously await. |
