Statement
Photography has long been considered a truth-telling media. The photographic image, a moment in time frozen in the emulsion, is a recording of the scene in front of the camera. However the photograph can both tell the truth and lie, sometimes at the same moment. Coming from a photojournalism background, my work seeks to find the truth in the world. This truth is at times best presented to the world in the form of straight, unmanipulated, documentary photographs. At times however, as my experiences in the arts have multiplied, I’ve found that the manipulated, staged, or otherwise faked scenes of human existence shines a light on a truth that straight documentary could not reveal. As an artist and photographer, I feel it is my duty to bring this truth into view.

Bio
Michael McCarty grew up near San Diego, California, the only child of a fairly typical American family, both parents on their second marriage, which would eventually end. Having few friends while growing up, he found escape within his imagination and the limitless bounds of the computer and Internet. After graduating from Vista High School, he began pursuing a Computer Science degree at MiraCosta College. Michael received his first SLR style camera as a graduation present from his father and step-mother. During his second year at MiraCosta, he managed to get into the Beginning Photography class. Photography, especially photojournalism, quickly consumed him and after a two year break from school after a car accident, he returned to school, this time as an art major, inspired by the work of such photographers as James Nachtwey, David Hockney, and Richard Avedon.
