Art 295—Career Preparation and Portfolio for Visual Artists (3 units)

Course Description:  
 

This course is for students of art who are interested in pursuing a four-year degree in fine art or graphic design to develop both a traditional and a digital portfolio of their artwork. Course topics include contemporary issues in art, careers in art, gallery and art school opportunities, methods of documentation of artwork, written and visual elements of various portfolios needed for the artist, and professional exhibition practices. Additionally, artists and curators will be invited to speak in the class and we will visit art museums, Modern Postcard, design studios and galleries.

  • Oceanside Museum of Art

 

Students will:  
 

Light and photograph flat and three-dimensional artwork
Digitize film and prepare digital files for screen and printed output
Learn portfolio requirements of galleries, museums and design studios
Prepare a traditional portfolio
Optimize images for the web
Create “tear” sheets for the portfolio and/or publicity needs
Submit images to Anna Rozman, our web expert, for placement on a class website
Give a public presentation of their artwork and the completed portfolio
Organize an exhibition of recent art produced at MiraCosta by class members
Read and respond to questions on the course textbooks

 

Writing requirements will include:  
 
  • Five descriptive and analytical reviews of artworks (current exhibitions) (1-2 pages)
  • Research paper on two artists who have influenced your work (2-3 pages)
  • Résumé
  • Letter to college for transfer or to potential employer
  • Artist’s statement (one page)
  • Biographical statement (one page)
  • Slide description list
  • Bibliography, outline, oral presentation with “bookmarked” images on contemporary artist
  • Press release for exhibition

Two copies of all written assignments will be required. Unless otherwise noted, all written assignments must be typed, double-spaced with standard margins. Drafts of edited papers should be stapled to final paper.

 

Grading:  
 

Attendance and participation in all class discussions and all group projects 20%

Written assignments 30%

Final Project (Portfolio, public presentation, and exhibition) 50%

Final: Portfolio, Public Presentation, Art Exhibition (50% of grade)

  • Resume - 5 points
  • Letter to college for transfer or to potential employer - 5 points
  • Sheet of 35mm slides (12 to 20), properly labeled - 5 points
  • Slide description list - 5 points
  • This includes printed "tear sheets," 2 - 3 images per page - 5 points
  • Artist's statement - 5 points
  • Biographical statement - 5 points
  • Web materials to Website Director - 5 points
  • Public Presentation of artwork - 5 points
  • Exhibition - 5 points

 

Supplies:  
 
  • Transportable media (appropriate to lab facilities)
  • Two 36-exposure rolls of Kodak EPY (ASA 64) film
  • Two 36-exposure rolls of Fugi Sensia or Kodak Elite (ASA 100) film
  • 35 mm adjustable camera with fresh battery or manual digital camera
  • Gray card
  • Slide labels
  • Archival slide storage sheets
  • Fine point permanent marker (not a Sharpie, please see example)
  • 3-ring binder for class notes, handouts, drafts of writing, plans art projects
  • Additional expenses: presentation needs for exhibition, invitation (8-10 dollars, Modern Postcard)

Lockers:  
 

There are lockers for storing supplies in the Business Building courtyard. You should be prepared to work with appropriate materials for every class. This class can be fun and productive. Take care and help each other.

 

Reading:  
 

Read through Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist as soon as you can. Specific chapters will be assigned in both texts throughout the semester. Supplemental articles will be provided.

 

Attendance Policy:  
 

This course is a lecture/lab course; attendance to all lecture and lab hours, as well as writing group workshops is mandatory. Exchange phone numbers or email addresses with other members of the class. Should absences occur it is necessary for the student to determine what they have missed and what is required with regard to homework, fieldtrips, and any other assignment BEFORE asking the instructor. Internet, slide lectures, video presentations and demonstrations will not be repeated. Field trips will take place during and outside of class.

Two absences are permitted without any explanation.

A student may be dropped without notice if three absences occur.

Attendance may be taken at any time during the class.

Tardiness or leaving early will count as one half of an absence.

 

Course requirements:  
 

Attendance is mandatory at all lectures, critiques and demonstrations.

Writing groups will need to meet outside the regular class hours. The writing center will help set up guidelines for group work.

Each student needs an email account. This will be a very important mode of communication in this course.

All assignments must be presented on time. Late assignments will not be accepted without prior consent of the instructor. Late assignments will be downgraded one letter grade.

It is the responsibility of the student to drop the class.

All written work must be original and stated in your own words; all sources must be sited. MiraCosta has a strict “academic honesty” policy that will be followed in this course. If you need extra help with written assignments please schedule an appointment with us or take a rough draft of your paper to the Writing Center for editing.
