The wealthy Miser Harpagon has two children, Èlise and Clèante. Èlise secretly loves a young man, Valère, who has become Harpagon's valet, just to stay close to her. Clèante loves an orphan without a fortune, Marianne, but Harpagon has decided to marry Marianne for himself, and he wants to marry off Èlise to the old Lord Anselme who will accept her without dowry.

Clèante, whose father does not give him any money, turns to his servant, La Flèche to find a money lender, who happens to be Harpagon himself. A violent argument pits the father against his son.

Harpagon has to offer a dinner to Marianne once the contract of marriage is signed. He wants to make sure by telling his cook and cabman, Maître Jacques that the dinner reception must the cheapest possible. Valère, pretends to Harpagon that he agrees the dinner should be cheap. Valère then confronts Maître Jacques, the latter swears revenge. Marianne arrives and totally dislikes Harpagon, and shares her feelings with Clèante.

Harpagon paces the stage looking at Clèante and Marianne's facial expressions. Harpagon is suspicious about Clèante's feelings toward Marianne, and to test him, he pretends to give him the young woman. Clèante falls into the trap and confesses his love for her. His father curses him. Clèante's servant, La Flèche, steals the Miser's cash box to use it as blackmail, forcing Harpagon to choose between Marianne and his beloved money.
