ACCT
101 – Practical Accounting Hybrid Class
This class is an introduction to financial
accounting and covers an overview of accounting terminology, important uses of
accounting data and how to properly complete the accounting cycle,
prepare and analyze financial statements. With the Hybrid format we meet one
day a week for two hours and the rest is on-line. At our class meetings, we start class with a current event;
because a stimulating current event discussion gets us all going at 7:30am. The
variety of topics students bring in never ceases to surprise me. Of course, it
should be accounting related, but that is an easy task, since accounting and
finance issues apply to every business – even professional sports teams (a
class favorite, right up there with fraud). I encourage students to actively
participate – it makes it more interactive and fun for all of us.
The typical class involves covering the topics via lecture, examples, problems,
PowerPoint presentations and then getting a chance to practice those concepts
immediately in small group breakout sessions. The textbook we are using for
this section is College Accounting, 2nd Edition-
Wild/Richardson/Shaw with McGraw Hill’s Connect Plus for on-line homework.
There is a
considerable amount of on-line homework (2-4 hours per week) that is expected
to be completed to reinforce the concepts and provide the essential practice
with the real numbers. The mixture of on-line homework and class time to work
on problems is very effective since we can focus our classroom time on the more
challenging problems and concepts. Homework is due 11:30pm on Monday nights. In
addition to the on-line homework, there are several exams, weekly quizzes or
hand-written homework submitted in class so I can evaluate the classroom’s
level of understanding before moving on to the next topic. One exam will be
on-line and the others in the classroom. Classroom problems and or visuals are
posted on Blackboard along with the syllabus and homework assignments, so as
long as you have internet access, you can access your assignments. I expect
students to visit the Blackboard site for announcements and updates regularly
and participate in the discussion board activities. I look forward to helping
you learn and acquire skills that can help you for a lifetime.
