FILM 101 - INTRODUCTION TO FILM
Sound Week Assignments - Due Date Range: September 27 - October 3, 2010
Updated 17 August 2010Sound (Lesson Five). The following assignments will help you learn more about the concept of film sound (music, spoken language, and sound effects). Quiz 3 includes what you learned last week about editing, as well as what you learn this week about sound and Citizen Kane. Here are the learning activities for this week:
(1) Read Giannetti Chapter Five, "Sound," and Chapter Twelve from "Synthesis: Citizen Kane" analyzing sound in the movie (after you have screened this film this week, review the other sections you read earlier, on photography, mise-en-scene, movement, editing).
(2) Read the Weblecture on Film Sound ("Hearing with New Ears").
(3) Screen Citizen Kane (USA, Welles, 1941). Pay attention to the facts of the plot and characters as well as to the ideas and feelings that Citizen Kane arouses in you; observe instances of sound techniques that go along with those ideas or feelings. You are expected to complete the screening before submitting your assignment in the forum this week (due Thursday evening). Take notes on this movie for future reference (e.g., for Quiz 3 this week and on the Unit One Writing Quiz next week).
(4) Complete your reading your classmates' postings in previous forums. Preview next week's Unit Writing Quiz; part of the quiz is a forum on sound and Citizen Kane.
(5) For up to 40 points, submit answers to the week's QUIZ (Q3) on film editing, on film sound, and on Citizen Kane. Submit your answers sometime by or before Sunday evening of the week (11:30 p.m. is the deadline, no grace period). Read the directions carefully before opening the quiz. The quiz remains open for 30 minutes only, and you can go in to post answers two times. Important Note: Your scores on this quiz and all remaining multiple-choice quizzes will be the average of the two scores, not the higher one; keep this in mind as you consider your preparation for the quiz and as you decide whether or not to make a second attempt. You can click on the quiz link to get information about the quiz, but before you click to button to begin taking the quiz, be sure to have all this week's assignments for this week and last week completed, and have your notes and book with you for reference. Submit your answers before 30 minutes have passed.
Enjoy these learning activities, Cybermates! If you need technical assistance about how to use Moodle or the MiraCosta Website, go to the Technical Requirements page or the Student Help Desk. Remember we want your CyberCinema experience to be both pleasant and productive! This is an exciting and worthwhile course of study, and I am very happy to be working with you. top
