FILM 101 - INTRODUCTION TO FILM
Week Seven Assignments - Due Date Range: September 27 - October 3, 2009
Updated 1 August 2009Sound (Lesson Five). The following assignments will help you learn more about the concept of film sound (music, spoken language, and sound effects). Many of these activities will also prepare you to pass Quiz 3 (on what you've learned this week and last week) and to succeed on other learning activities in the class. Here are the learning activities for this week:
(1) Read Giannetti Chapter Five, "Sound," and Chapter Twelve from "Synthesis: Citizen Kane" analyzing the film by concepts studied to date (especially sections on photography, mise-en-scene, movement, editing, and sound). Great analysis!
(2) Read Weblecture 5 ("Hearing with New Ears").
(3) Screen Citizen Kane (USA, Welles, 1941). Pay attention to the facts of the plot and characters as well as to the ideas and feelings that Citizen Kane arouses in you; observe instances of sound techniques that go along with those ideas or feelings. Take notes that you can use for reference for the quiz, assignments, and forums.
(4) Complete your reading your classmates' postings in previous forums. Participate fully in the Sound Discussion Forum. Read through the conversations of your classmates in this forum, and keep coming back throughout this week and next to read what your classmates have written and discussed.
(5) For up to 40 points, submit answers to the week's quiz on film editing and sound (Q3) sometime by or before Saturday evening of the week. Read the directions carefully before opening the quiz. The quiz remains open for 30 minutes only, and you can go in to post answers two times. Important Note: Your scores on quizzes will be the average of the two scores, not the higher one; keep this in mind as you consider your preparation for the quiz and as you decide whether or not to make a second attempt. You can click on the quiz link to get information about the quiz, but before you click to button to begin taking the quiz, be sure to have all this week's assignments for this week and last week completed, and have your notes and book with you for reference. Submit your answers before 30 minutes have passed.
UNIT ONE DISCUSSIONS (total possible=140 points): In addition to posting your introduction (worth 20 points), and reading through the introductions of your classmates, you are expected to read all postings of your classmates in all of the regular discussion forums for Unit One (photography, mise-en-scene, movement, editing, and sound), and to contribute to and participate fully in at least four of these five regular forums in the unit. Active and substantive participation in regular discussion forums includes (a) an initial posting answering all parts of each assignment (worth up to 20 points) and (b) two or more substantive postings responding to your classmates (worth up to 10 points). Post your response to the forum assignment by or before Wednesday (by 11:30 p.m.); then send at least two substantive replies to two or more classmates' postings by or before Saturday (by 11:30 p.m.). Postings submitted after those deadlines will not receive points and will be deleted. Note 1: Questions on the Unit One Writing Quiz may be drawn from the postings in these Unit One discussion forums. Note 2: By participating in all 5 of the discussion forums that relate to the five lessons in Unit One, you help ensure you can earn a very high score; if you end up with a performance better than the perfect 140, your X-factor will be enhanced. Scores and comments will be reported at D1 and D2 in Week Seven.
