LEARNING LOG

English 201 Home

Print out this page, or make your own form; and turn in a learning log every Thursday.  Each learning log is worth 10 points, for a total of 150 points showing the development and achievement of your academic and workplace skills (AWS) over the semester.  Consider these criteria for evaluation: Provide a complete and accurate heading at the upper left corner.  Check your writing for clarity, accuracy, and specificity. Punctuate titles correctly, and practice editing those areas you and I identify for improvement this semester.  Use blue or black ink.  Give a single whole number time estimate, not fractions or number ranges. N.B., The expected out-of-class workload for a 4-unit college class (study, practice, homework, research, etc.) is 8 hours for each week. Use your course calendar to identify specific assignments for the learning period. Use space on the back to complete your log.

1.                                                          On the blank to the left, identify your learning period: first the date you completed the previous learning log, then today’s date.  (If you missed a learning log, go all the way back to the date of your last log.)

2.                  Write a single whole number that represents a fair estimate of the total time you spent, outside of class, on English 201 assignments during learning period.  (The world of work calls this "time on task.")

3.   List the specific assignments or activities you completed or worked on during this out-of-class time. Please use details to be specific about which reading, writing, and researching assignments or activities you did, as well as what work with others (classmates, tutor, etc.) what other activities or work directly connected with your English 201 assignments you engaged in during this learning period.  Quantify if possible to show how much time you spent on each of the assignments.

4.  Freewrite on your English 201 experience during this learning period.  Think of this as a weekly journal on your learning.  For example, you can clarify any new knowledge acquired, any knowledge or understanding deepened or enhanced, any new skill gained or old skill improved as a result of activities in or out of class.  You can write about what you've been reading or researching in the class.  You can discuss what may be difficult or confusing to you, or what is most interesting or stimulating to you, or both. You can discuss what you're learning from classmates, too, or how you are working for your success in the class (e.g., visits to the Writing Center, work with friends or family on your skills, etc.).  This is the place to write freely about what's going on with you during this period of reflection as related to this class—or to communicate what you're learning elsewhere  (in other classes or from personal activities) that relates to English 201.   Also, if anything has been confusing or frustrating for you during this learning period, or if you have any questions, this is the place to let me know.   I appreciate specific suggestions that will help you better achieve your learning objectives,  I enjoy learning what's working to enhance your learning in the class, and I can be a better teacher for you when you share with me the details, no matter how trivial they may seem, of your learning experience in English 201.  Begin below, and use the back to complete your freewriting (see what you can produce in 10-15 minutes—if you get going, feel free to use your own paper and staple to this log).
