The word "Halloween" derives from the Eve of All Saints, the holy ("hallowed") ones, hence the Eve of All Hallows, Hallow Even (or "evening"): Hallow e'en. To learn more about Halloween, go to Customs and Traditions, an informative site developed by the Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance. The site provides details about the origins of Halloween traditions; it also explains the Christian celebration of Halloween and the Celtic and neo-pagan celebrations of Samhain and describes common misconceptions about Halloween.
Things That Go Bump in the Night.
Subtitled "The Skull Speaks" and developed by the National Institute for Science Education at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, this site is about fear, its causes, and the physiological mechanism behind it. The site includes a discussion of why the image of the “mad scientist” has been so popular and why some people seek thrills and love risks. The site includes a glossary and a bibliography of both print and Web resources.d
