Part I Step 1: Welcome Page

If you are enrolled in one of the following classes (or are looking to add one of the following classes) you are in the right place:

#2040 (Math 115 Calculus with Application)
    #2848 (Math 126 Precalculus I : College Algebra)

Welcome! My name is Mrs. Apalatea and I will be your instructor for this online math class.

Some students may find the idea of taking this class to be somewhat intimidating. Maybe this will be your first online math class or your first math class in several years. Maybe math is not your easiest subject or you're concerned about the modality of instruction. Regardless of your past experience, I believe completing this class is absolutely attainable for any student who has the time, devotion and persistence to dedicate to the class for the entirety of its duration - unless, of course, your learning style is inconsistent with the class format.

If you are on the class roster, please be sure that your email address and your name are current with MiraCosta College. I send out email from the class rosters and you may be dropped if you miss the directions given in that email.

Here are a few very important things about the class that each of you should know BEFORE you commit taking this class.

1. On-Site (In-person) Testing Requirements

You are required to take proctored assessments either by coming to MiraCosta College's Academic Proctoring Center (APC) OR by making alternate approved proctoring arrangements if you live outside of the county and do not wish to drive to the MiraCosta campus. The Academic Proctoring Center (APC) here at MiraCosta has a procedure for students to follow to get approval for an out-of-area proctor. If you plan to take your proctored test somewhere other than the MiraCosta College APC, please see the APC's homepage for more information: https://www.miracosta.edu/StudentServices/ProctoringCenter). You must find a proctor meeting certain criteria and you must submit your proctor request well in advance of any Test. The APC will investigate your proposed proctor and will get back to you with either approval or disapproval. So, please don't wait until the last minute.

Note: if you have taken an online mathematics class at MiraCosta before, you may have used the Math Learning Center (MLC) to take your tests. We do NOT take tests in the MLC. We take tests in the APC. Please be sure you go to the correct facility. The location of the APC at the Oceanside campus is near the Admissions & Records office. The location of the APC at the San Elijo Campus is just before the main library entrance. Also, please remember that every class works differently. Please do not expect this online class to work the same as some other online class you may have taken.

Please refer to your Syllabus (in the next step) to see how many on-site proctored assessments you have. You will have several choices as to the day and time you choose to come on-site and take these assessments. It is possible to take assessments early - please refer to your Syllabus to see the conditions under which you can take assessments early.

You can NOT take a Quiz/Test/Final or do a required Discussion Board posting any later than its due date. Early is fine, late is not - so please plan to do assignments early in case something unexpected comes up.

2. Mandatory Orientation

There is a mandatory online orientation for all students enrolled in my online classes. You must log into the class materials (MyMathLab) by the end of the day on the 1st day of classes. Secondly, you complete the entire orientation no later than 11:59 pm on the second day of instruction for your class (or within 24 hours if you add the class after the 1st day of instruction). Students who do not log into the class materials on the 1st day of class or who do not complete the entire orientation by the 2nd day of class will be dropped from the class for non-attendance. You will know when your orientation is complete because the entire semester's worth of homework assignments will only open once you complete the orientation.

As soon as you add the class, please begin any portions of your mandatory class orientation that are available. Please note that part of your mandatory orientation requires you to complete some work in your required online materials (MyMathLab). You will not be able to complete the orientation without purchasing your required online materials. If you are not able to purchase the required class materials right now, but you will be able to afford purchasing them before the end of Week 1 or 2, please read about the 17-day Temporary Access offered by the publisher.

Please feel free to go part-way through this orientation even if you are not currently enrolled in the class. Just DO NOT purchase the class materials unless you are actually enrolled in the class. You can complete Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, and a portion of Step 4 without purchasing the required online materials. If you want, you can use the free 17-day Temporary Access to get into the class and look around to make sure this is the class you want. But, only students who are officially enrolled in the class through Admissions and Records will be allowed to stay in the online class materials.

3. Crashing / Adding Once the Semester has Begun

If the class you want fills before its first day of instruction, get on the wait-list. I will give out Permission Numbers based on the Wait List and how many slots are available.

4. A Note About Required Online Materials

Your required online materials are called MyMathLab. It contains the eBook for the class as well as all homework, quizzes and other online graded activities.

Registration into MyMathLab will be needed in order to complete your mandatory orientation. Failure to purchase and register in this required material will result in being dropped from the class.

Please note that non-dial up internet access will be needed to access MyMathLab from your home (if you wish to work from your home computer). All the computers in the Math Learning Center (MLC) at MiraCosta College are already configured properly. It is NOT required that you have your own computer at home for this class; you may use the computers in the MLC for your entire class. The MLC is open in Fall and Spring for the full 16-week semester and for the first few days during Finals week.

If you have technical difficulties with your computer/browser and you are not able to resolve them immediately, you need to plan to to use the campus computers (or some other computer) to continue taking this class. While you have access to Technical Support from your online class materials (there's a link in the top-right), technical difficulties are NOT a valid excuse for getting behind in the class. More information about MyMathLab, as well as much more information about the class (including the assessment schedule), can be found in Step 2 of this mandatory orientation.
