Hope! Our Basic Skills work will radiate in inspiring and unexpected ways...

A Goal
To develop a five year plan for improving Basic Skills Education at MiraCosta College

A Definition
For this initiative, California is defining basic skills as “skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and ESL, as well as learning skills and study skills, which are necessary for students to succeed in college-level work.”

A Process
To spend a month--from mid-February to mid-March--completing a self study that identifies 1) the effectiveness of our existing efforts, 2) the obstacles to improving basic skills education at our college, and 3) ideas for improving our efforts.

An Invitation
Please join this effort to enrich and enhance Basic Skills education at MiraCosta. We have set up four ways for you to join this important conversation:

1. Use Our Wiki

Want to contribute but not sure you can attend the meetings? Our wiki is a great way to help us complete the self study by adding your comments and ideas to an electronic record of our collective conversation. Visit the wiki, and let Jim Sullivan know if you need any help using it. The password to add your comments to the wiki--which works best in Firefox, by the way--is the following: miracosta

2. Share Your Thoughts In Person

Drop by OC 3511 between 4-5 PM on any Monday between now and March 3 to share your ideas with Jim Sullivan and other Basic Skills Committee Members during one of our self-study work sessions: February 11, February 18, February 25, and March 3.

3. Email or Call Jim Sullivan or any other Basic Skills Committee member

Send an email to jimsullivan@miracosta.edu with your observations, evaluations, ideas, suggestions, and comments or call me to chat on the phone (x6303). You can also contact any other member of the Basic Skills Committee via our contacts page.

4. Attend our Basic Skills Initiative Retreat

On Saturday, March 8, MiraCostans interested in crafting our 5 year vision for Basic Skills at our college will gather for a day of work sessions to achieve two goals: 1) to revise and finalize the self study , and 2) to establish a list of action priorities for the current budget cycle and the next five years.

Please join us for this crucial conversation and work session at the Hilton Garden Inn in Carlsbad on March 8 from 8am-5pm.

Please RSVP to miracostabsi@gmail.com to let us know that you will be attending.

Even if you plan on attending the retreat, we hope you will also contribute your ideas to the self-study via the wiki, by attending a meeting, or through a note to or conversation with Jim before the retreat.
