Part I Step 1: Welcome Page

If you are enrolled (or considering enrolling) in one of the following sections you are in the right place:

Math 64: Intermediate Algebra #3037

Math 131: Pre-Calculus II #2944

Welcome! My name is Mr. Zyburt and I will be your instructor for this online math class.

Some students may find the idea of taking this class to be somewhat intimidating. Maybe this will be your first online math class or your first math class in several years. Maybe math is not your easiest subject. Regardless of your past experience, I believe completing this class is absolutely attainable for any student who has the time, devotion and persistence to dedicate to the class for the entirety of its duration - unless, of course, your learning style is inconsistent with the class format.

If you are on the class roster, please be sure that your email address and your name are current with MiraCosta College. I send out email from the class rosters and you may be dropped if you miss the directions given in that email.

Here are a few very important things about the class that each of you should know BEFORE you commit taking this class.

1. On-Campus Testing Requirements

As noted in the schedule of classes (both the printed version and the online version), you are required to come to campus to take some of your class assessments. These  3 Chapter Tests and the Final Exam will be taken in Academic Proctoring Center (APC) on campus and will NOT be on a computer. You will have several choices as to the day and time you choose to come in and take these assessments. You can always take assessments early. You just can NOT take a Chapter Test or the Final Exam later than its due date.

Please feel free to finish the class early. However, please be aware that grades can not submitted and credit for this class can not be earned before the end of the semester.

Note: If you are deployed in the military and have a Testing Officer (or a similar set up) willing to proctor your on-site, please email me at least two weeks before your class begins with that request. I will need time to contact and get information from your Testing Officer before the first day of your class before I can agree to that proctoring arrangement.

2. Mandatory Orientation

As noted in the schedule of classes (both the printed version and the online version), there is a mandatory online orientation for all students enrolled in my online classes. You must complete the entire orientation no later than 11:59 pm on the first day of instruction for your class (or within 24 hours if you add the class after the 1st day of instruction). Students not completing the entire orientation by this deadline will be dropped from the class for non-attendance.

As soon as you add the class, please complete your mandatory class orientation . Please note that part of your mandatory orientation requires you to complete some work in your required online materials (MyMathLab). Thus, you will not be able to complete the orientation without purchasing your required online materials. Thus, please do not add this class if you are not able to purchase AND do work in the online class materials before the orientation deadline.

Please feel free to go part-way through the orientation even if you are not currently enrolled in the class. Just DO NOT purchase the class materials unless you are actually enrolled in the class. You can complete Step 1, Step 2, and a portion of Step 3 without purchasing the required online materials.

3. Crashing / Adding Once the Semester has Begun

If any class fills before its 1st day of instruction, but you still want to be in it, please carefully follow the steps below:

  • Check Surf (online enrollment) regularly. People add and drop classes frequently in the weeks, days and hours leading up to the first day of class. If a spot opens up, take it! Once you are in the class, do the entire mandatory orientation.
  • While you are waiting to (hopefully) get a spot in the class, you can complete the steps in the mandatory orientation up until the actual purchase of the online materials.
  • If the class is still filled on the first day of instruction for that class, please send me an email (jzyburt@miracosta.edu) with the following information:

    1. Your Name as you are Registered with MiraCosta College
    2. Your MiraCosta College 8-digit Student ID Number
    3. Which class level (Math 64 or Math 131) & class number (#3037 or #2944) you wish to add
    4. Acknowledgement that you have read and understood Steps 1 & 2 in this mandatory orientation
    5. Acknowledgement that you will purchase your online class materials and complete your online orientation within 24 hours.

  • Once I get the above information, I will email you a Permission Number to enroll into the class.
If your email does not contain all 5 of the items requested above, you will not get a Permission Number.
  • If the class add deadline (January 30th) has passed, you will need to wait until another semester to take the class.

4. A Note About Required Online Materials

Your required online materials are called MyMathLab/Mastering.

Registration into MyMathLab/Mastering will be needed in order to complete your mandatory orientation. Failure to purchase and register in this required material will result in being dropped from the class.

Please note that non-dial up internet access will be needed to access MyMathLab/Mastering from your home (if you wish to work from your home computer). All the computers in the Math Learning Center at MiraCosta College are already configured properly. It is NOT required that you have your own computer at home for this class; you may use the computers in the MLC for your entire class. The MLC is open in Fall and Spring for the full 16-week semester and for the first few days during Finals week.

If you have technical difficulties on your computer and you are not able to resolve them immediately, you need to plan to to use the campus computers to continue taking this class. While you have access to Technical Support from your online class materials (there's a link in the top-right), technical difficulties are NOT a valid excuse for getting behind in the class. More information about MyMathLab/Mastering, as well as much more information about the class (including the assessment schedule), can be found in Step 2 of this mandatory orientation.
