This is a self-paced, open entry online course.  Students can choose a flexible work schedule.  Course is finished when all lessons are completed.

Course Description: 

This is a self-paced, open-entry, online course that emphasizes practical applications needed for working in a business office.  Information and drills on telephone techniques, filing, proofreading, office equipment, mailing procedures, and teamwork are included.  Assignments also include “people skills” and teamwork. applications.

 

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, a student should be able to:

  1. complete a comprehensive basic skills employment test with a passing grade of 80% on each test.
  2. describe an office environment.
  3. explain the flow of work in an office environment.
  4. list the job duties and qualification for administrative support staff in an office.
  5. list attributes that employers expect from office staff.
  6. list and explain the steps in providing quality telephone service.
  7. create and format business documents.
  8. describe how an office petty cash fund is set up and maintained.
  9. list communication techniques practiced by effective office workers.
  10. describe the internal and external forces that influence office communication.

  1. list the procedures used for processing incoming and outgoing office mail.create an office paper and electronic filing system following the ARMA guidelines.
  2. explain the importance of team and “people skills” for those working in an office environment

 

Course Materials:

This course does not require a textbook.  Information and assignments will be provided through lectures, resources, and Internet materials.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Achieve a score of at least 80% on a basic skills employment test in proofreading, spelling, filing, basic math, communication, typing, and document production.
  2. Identify the operations of business and the flow of work.
  3. Use correct communication skills in creating appropriate business documents.

2.    Students who have not consistently submitted assignments during the semester will be dropped on November 20, 2008. 

 

3.    Students should be aware of the MiraCosta plagiarism statement in the catalog.  A submitted assignment, which is determined to be the work of a person other than the student, will receive no credit.

Submitting Assignments:

 

This is a self-paced online course that allows you to work in the BOT Model Office, 4803B OC, or online.  Students are responsible for completing and submitting all assignments as listed in the course syllabus.  Assignments reviewed and graded in the BOT Model Office will get immediate feedback and grading.  Weekly assignments submitted through email will be reviewed and graded within five (5) days. All assignments submitted through email must be identified in the subject line with your last name and the assignment name or number as directed in the syllabus, for example:  Striebel Project 1.

 

 To expedite responses to questions, key the word QUESTION in the subject line of the email, and you will receive a response within 24-48 hours.

 

The Blackboard site contains data files, all assignments, announcements, lectures, special instructions or notes for assignments, discussion questions, and assignment grades. 

 

Even though this is a self-paced course and students can select a flexible schedule for completing assignments, students must show steady progress through the semester by viewing the program orientation, submitting the student contact form, submitting weekly assignments, and maintaining contact with the instructor.  Students will be dropped for lack of successful progress.  A suggested timeline for completing assignments is given in the syllabus.  Students are encouraged to follow the timeline or work ahead as a guide to successful completion of the course.
