Course
Description:
This
course will introduce students to a career as a legal office assistant. Students will become familiar with legal
office procedures and the necessary background information to perform basic
administrative tasks in a law office.
Assignments include: legal
terminology, legal documents, legal transcription; legal jurisdictions; legal
research. This course provides an
excellent review of listening, editing, transcription, and word processing
skills while learning about the administrative operations of a legal office.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of
the course, the student should be able to:
1.
Identify
commonly used legal forms.
2.
Learn
legal terminology.
3.
Create
and format legal documents from templates.
4.
Proofread
and edit documents with 100% accuracy.
5.
Transcribe
legal documents from dictation files.

Getting
Started:
ü All forms and
supplemental materials are on the CD or in Blackboard.
ü Read each
assignment very carefully to be sure you understand the objectives and goals of
each task.
ü Proofread your
document and make corrections before submitting for grading.
ü Contact the
instructor if you have any questions or need further explanation for the
assignments.
ü The suggested
timing for each chapter is included in the assignment sheet but remember that
this is a self-paced course and you can choose to complete the course before
the end of the semester.
Grading:
Final grade
will be based on the total number of assignments completed. Assignments must be proofread to be 100%
correct. Points are given for each
assignment and deductions will be made for errors (1 point for each
error). A = 295 – 265 points; B = 235-264
points; C = 205-234 points; D = 185-204 points; F = below 184 points.
Submitting
Assignments:
This
is a self-paced e-flex course that
allows you to work in the BOT Model Office, 4803B OC, or at home except for the
transcription assignments. All
transcription assignments must be completed in the BOT Model Office, 4803B,
OC. Students are responsible for completing and
submitting all assignments as listed in the course syllabus. Assignments reviewed and graded in the BOT
Model Office will get immediate feedback and grading. Weekly assignments submitted through email
will be reviewed and graded within five (5) days. All assignments submitted
through email must be identified in the subject line with your last name and the assignment name or number as directed in the
syllabus, for example: Striebel Project
1.
To expedite responses to questions, key the
word QUESTION
in the subject line of the email, and you will receive a response within 24-48
hours.
The
Blackboard site contains data files, all assignments, announcements, lectures,
special instructions or notes for assignments, discussion questions, and
assignment grades.
Even
though this is a self-paced course and students can select a flexible schedule
for completing assignments, students must show steady progress through the
semester by viewing the program orientation, submitting the student contact
form, submitting weekly assignments, and maintaining contact with the
instructor. Students will be dropped for
lack of successful progress. A suggested
timeline for completing assignments is given in the syllabus. Students are encouraged to follow the
timeline or work ahead as a guide to successful completion of the course.
