Getting
Started:
This course is designed for those
who want to explore the career field of medical transcription and
documentation. The assignments provide a
basic introductory overview of the types of work tasks performed by a medical
transcriptionist. Students completing
this course will be able to make a decision on whether to pursue additional
training to become employed as a medical documentation specialist. All assignments in this course are from a
clinic/office not a hospital setting.
To give the student a broad
overview of each of the medical specialties, all lessons in the book will be
covered. Not all review exercises will
be assigned for grading but students are encouraged to complete all exercises
to increase their medical transcription knowledge and skill.
Read the Preface
To The Student on pages iv and v for an overview
of how the book is organized and the sections of each chapter.
Turn to page 185 and quickly browse through each of
the appendices. While working on the
chapter materials, these appendices will help you to format and transcribe the
exercises.

Descriptions
A complete and thorough understanding of the
medical transcription job description and tasks is vital to successful
completion of assignments. Chapters 1
and 2 give the student the opportunity to build this knowledge before starting
the specialty transcription exercises.
Starting
Dictation:
Dictation begins with Chapter
2. The first dictation assignment in
each chapter is the terms used in the dictation. It is very important to follow the assignment
instructions and go through the terms two times. The first time you play the terms, follow
along in the book and look at the word and the definition. The second time, open a blank screen and type
the word as it is being dictated. This
exercise will help you become familiar with the words, pronunciation, spelling,
and definitions.
Transcription Style Tips are included on the pages of
the chapters. These tips will help you
while transcribing.
If you are working in the lab,
reference materials are available on the bookshelf. If you are working from home, you can access
medical reference materials online.
Grading:
Point deductions for transcription exercises: - 3 format error; -2 wrong word;
-1 punctuation, capitalization, or grammar error; -1 spelling error. Total available points for each transcription
exercise: 20 points.
Point values are listed with each of the exercises,
reading assignments, and research assignments.
Final
grades will be based on total points earned from all activities.
A = 774-860
B = 688-773
C = 602-687
D = 516 -601
F = below 515
Submitting
Assignments:
After reading the required pages for each chapter,
open a new Word document and save as Chapter______ (number). All assignments from each chapter should be
saved in this Word document. Identify
each question or exercise by number. All
assignments should be saved to hard or USB drive and submitted or presented for
grading when the entire chapter assignments are completed.
This
is a self-paced e-flex course that
allows you to work in the BOT Model Office, 4803B OC, or online. Students are responsible for completing and
submitting all assignments as listed in the course syllabus. Assignments reviewed and graded in the BOT
Model Office will get immediate feedback and grading. Weekly assignments submitted through email
will be reviewed and graded within five (5) days. All assignments submitted
through email must be identified in the subject line with your last name and the assignment name or number as directed in the
syllabus, for example: Striebel Project
1.
To expedite responses to questions, key the
word QUESTION
in the subject line of the email, and you will receive a response within 24-48
hours.
The
Blackboard site contains data files, all assignments, announcements, lectures,
special instructions or notes for assignments, discussion questions, and assignment
grades.
Even
though this is a self-paced course and students can select a flexible schedule
for completing assignments, students must show steady progress through the
semester by viewing the program orientation, submitting the student contact form,
submitting weekly assignments, and maintaining contact with the
instructor. Students will be dropped for
lack of successful progress. A suggested
timeline for completing assignments is given in the syllabus. Students are encouraged to follow the timeline
or work ahead as a guide to successful completion of the course.
