At MiraCosta, Community Education is the umbrella term for Continuing Education (tuition-free, noncredit) and Community Services and Business Development (fee-based programs and activities, including contract education). I provide administrative support for both in addition to the Small Business Development Center of North San Diego County and site administration of the Community Learning Center. I've been described by my previous boss as the Margot Fontaine of MiraCosta because my "primary responsibilities involve a skillful dance" among programs and campuses. My office resides in the MiraCosta College Community Learning Center in downtown Oceanside.
I came to MiraCosta in 1989 as the Program Coordinator, Satellite Noncredit Programs. A year later, the "Coordinator" part of my title became "Administrator," and a couple of years after that, as part of a reorganization, I moved into the Dean's position. The highlight of my time at MiraCosta has to be the opening of the Community Learning Center which gave a permanent "home" to many of our noncredit programs. The first building to be renovated on the site was a former Mexican restaurant which now houses the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
Just prior to coming to MiraCosta, I served as an Area Coordinator for off-campus bachelor's degree programs delivered by Southern Illinois University (SIU). I also taught management courses in those programs. Before my employment with SIU were more years than I want to admit of teaching and administering in schools located in Colorado, Maine, Texas, Germany, and Morocco.
Currently, I serve as the Association of Community and Continuing Education (ACCE) liaison to the Chief Instructional Officers Executive Board and also represent the organization on the System Advisory Committee on Curriculum. I have served the organization as president, past president, vice president/president elect, secretary, regional representative, and Continuing Education (noncredit) Council Leader. Within the college I am a member of the President’s Cabinet, the Planning and Budgeting Council Please add links to PBC, AMPC, and FPAC, the Academic Master Planning Committee, the committee for Strategic Planning for Information Technology , Facilities Planning Advisory Committee, and the Staff Development Committee.
My administrative philosophy is well articulated in this anonymous quote, "Your greatest contribution to humankind is to be sure there is a teacher in every classroom who cares that every student every day learns and grows and feels like a real human being." My job, as I see it, is to find those individuals and support them in every way that I can.
In addition to my work, my family and friends; my passions include learning,
traveling, reading, my dogs, and hiking.
My deepest impulses are optimistic, an attitude that seems to me as spiritually necessary and proper as it is intellectually suspect.

No woman should be shamefaced in attempting through her work to give back to the world a portion of its lost heart.
Louise Bogan
Some luck lies in not getting what you thought you wanted but getting what
you have, which once you have got it you may be smart enough to see is what you
would have wanted had you known.
Garrison Keillor
I think that wherever your journey takes you, there are new gods waiting there, with divine patience--and laughter.
