Saving in the .jpg File Format & Naming your Image

This follows the Reducing File Size tutorial on the handouts page.
Please see the preceding tutorial if your file is not the required size to turn in.
These are directions are written for resizing in Photoshop and keeping the file's metadata.

You have resized your file and now you are ready to save it.

Saving a file to a .jpg should be the last step. Always save a copy of your originals in .tiff or .psd. with layers.

These directions are specific to saving as a .jpg and NOT loosing metadata. Metadata such as your copyright name and other information: f-stop, shutter speed, ISO, etc. is required as part of the image file. Avoid using the Save for Web option when turning in files as this strips away all metadata.

File > Save As > brings up the following large dialog box.

save as dialog box

In the Save As dialog box, follow these steps:

  1. Click the New Folder button, at the lower left, if you are turning in more than one file for an exercise. Name the folder with your first initial and last name followed by the exercise name. My example has my name. Note the xxxxx on the folder - you need to follow the directions on the specific exercise page to name the folder properly.

  2. Select JPEG from the Format drop down menu.

  3. Save As: at the top is where you name the file. Always start off with your first initial and last name followed by the exercise name. Replace the xxx with the correct exercise name.

  4. Click Save
jpg options
    1. Change the Quality to 12
    2. Select Baseline Optimized.
    3. Click OK

Your file should now be in the folder on the desktop that you created in the Save As dialog box.
