Dance Cultures of the World

This course surveys dance around the world in a cultural and social context. It emphasizes the different ways dance is used to express ideas about the relationship between a person and the body, the opposite sex, religion, cultural traditions, and ritual. Cultures include Africa, Asia, Latin America, Middle East, North America, and Eastern Europe. Students are required to attend a live dance performance.

Requirements for the course include:

  • Attending a pre-approved live dance concert is a requirement for this course.
  • Having regular access to a computer with connection to the Internet and check email regularly (note: group emails often go to junk mail/spam)
  • There is no required textbook for the course. The supplemental textbook is optional and available at the MCC Bookstore.
  • This course is 100% online. All reading, submitting assignments, and quizzes are in the online course.  
  • Must submit all written assignments as pdf or Microsoft Word doc or docx.
  • Understand and apply appropriate Web netiquette. 
  • Although the course is online, it is not 100% self-paced. Weekly discussion forums, assignments, etc. are required.
