Instructor notes: This is a fully online class, with no in-person meetings.  Assignments are released and due each week; the course is not self-paced.  The course is a  late-start, 15-week course; it begins on Tuesday, September 5 and ends on Saturday, December 16.  This means that students are expected to commit ten hours per week.  (Actual time needed to succeed will depend on each student's interest and skill level.)

The instructor will open the course in Blackboard for preview before the start of the course so that students can access the syllabus, view the class schedule, and become familiar with the structure of the class. Please check your email the week before the class starts, or at the very latest on the first day of class. If you do not receive an email about the class, please check your spam folder or check the "Announcements" area of the course site in Blackboard so you can get important information about how to get started in the class.

Textbook information for this class is available at the MiraCosta College bookstore website.   The text is the Developing person through childhood and adolescence, by Kathleen Berger (10th edition).  As can be seen on the bookstore website, students can buy the text new or used, or rent it new or used.  Digital versions of the text are also available.

You will need a text to succeed in this course.  There are ten copies of the text on reserve at the MiraCosta library if you cannot afford to purchase your own text.  Or you can apply for a text through MiraCosta's Textbook Loan Program, or check with the Financial Aid office to see if you are eligible for any of their services.  The tests are all based on the 10th edition, but if you cannot afford the 10th edition, the 9th edition is better than having no text.  (The instructor has included all of the page numbers for both the 9th and 10th editions for all discussion board assignments, but students would need to compare the 9th edition against what is in the 10th edition to prepare for the tests.)

Enjoy previewing the text; students have said they found the text one of the best they have used, so it is worth getting it ahead of time to ensure your success in the class.

I look forward to learning with you this semester!
