Charley's Aunt

By Brandon Thomas
Directed by Tracy Williams
Comic confusion reigns supreme in this “play
that made cross-dressing respectable.” Written in
1892 this romantic farce still delights and charms
audiences over a century later. Thomas’ characters
are comical, hopelessly devoted, scheming,
stubborn, money-hungry and spoiled. It is farce
at its finest!

Machinal

By Sophie Treadwell
Directed by Eric Bishop
Based on true events, Machinal is story of
isolation that introduces us to Helen, a woman
whose entire life has been dictated by the
people and machines around her. She follows
the rituals that society expects of a woman
and subsequently marries her boss. As Helen
begins to discover her own desires and needs,
the story takes a turn to the unthinkable. Written
in 1928 by playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell, Machinal is considered one
of the high points of expressionist theatre in American theater history.

She Loves Me

Book by Joe Masteroff
Music by Jerry Bock
Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick
Directed by Tracy Williams
Based on the Hungarian play that
inspired the movie “The Shop Around
the Corner,” this unsentimental romance
will never age.
“ An intimate work with nothing on its
sophisticated mind other than romance,
She Loves Me is no less an anomaly on
Broadway today than it was 30 years ago.
Given how the world has aged since then,
audiences may be hungrier than ever for this
summons to a continuously melodic evening
of sheer enchantment and complete escape.”

The House of Blue Leaves

By John Guare
Directed by Lisa Berger
Artie Shaugnessy is a songwriter with
visions of glory. Toiling by day as a
zookeeper, he suffers in seedy lounges by
night, plying his wares at piano bars in
Queens, New York, where he lives with
his wife, Bananas, much to the chagrin of
Artie’s downstairs mistress, Bunny Flingus,
who’ll sleep with him anytime but refuses
to cook until they are married. On the day
the Pope is making his first visit to the city,
Artie’s son Ronnie goes AWOL from Fort
Dix, stowing a home-made bomb intended
to blow up the Pope in Yankee Stadium.
Also arriving, Artie’s old school chum,
now a successful Hollywood producer,
Billy Einhorn with starlet girlfriend in tow,
who holds the key to Artie’s dreams of
getting out of Queens and away from the
life he so despises. This play’s mix of black
comedy, farce, realistic drama and social
commentary focuses on the underside of
the American dream and the destructive
nature of the media on people’s dreams and
personal lives.

Sarah Kelley wins "Best Stage Manager in Nation" award.
MiraCosta graduate Sarah Kelley won the 2006 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival national stage management competition. Kelley is one of only two stage managers throughout the entire country to enjoy this honor.
“This is probably the single most prestigious award our theatre department has ever received,” enthuses drama instructor and “Fuente Ovejuna” director Eric Bishop. “This competition is open to everyone: graduate schools and Ivy League schools included. They only give awards for the best of the best.”

Kelley was selected for her superb management of MiraCosta’s production of “Fuente Ovejuna.” The entire cast of “Fuente Ovejuna” originally beat out more than 60 other college, university, conservatory and graduate school theatre productions to be selected for the 2006 Region VIII Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Utah this past February.
Kelley was honored at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. this April as part of the Kennedy Center finals. She had the opportunity to stage manage a production showcasing lighting design at the Kennedy Center. She was also offered and accepted a stage management fellowship to attend the summer 2006 O’Neill National Playwrights’ Conference in Waterford, Connecticut. Kelley graduated from MiraCosta in the spring and was accepted to USC.
