MiraCosta College Citrus Garden Comes into Fruition!
On February 26, 2014, a citrus garden planting ceremony took place at MiraCosta College as part of the City of Oceanside’s Arbor Day Celebration.
About 25 students from the Horticulture 115: Soil Science class planted a total of 12 citrus trees, including two lemon, two tangerine, six orange and two grapefruit trees. The City of Oceanside and Cal Fire paid for the trees while Netafim, one of the world's leading irrigation companies, donated the irrigation equipment.
“This collaboration is great for the City of Oceanside, Cal Fire and the college,” said City of Oceanside landscape development coordinator Delia Juncal. “We thought this was a great open space to plant trees. Plus, it will provide nutrition for students.”
MiraCosta’s Facilities Department did a lot of preparation to create the garden, including devising ways to grow the trees as naturally as possible using natural pesticides instead of chemicals.
2014 is the 7th consecutive year that the City of Oceanside has been named a Tree City USA. Cal Fire presented the city with this year’s designation at the planting event.
The citrus garden is located at the MiraCosta College Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside, CA. 92056, between the 3400 and 3500 buildings. The planting of the MiraCosta Citrus Garden was made possible by the partnership of the City of Oceanside, the San Diego Regional Urban Forest Council, Cal Fire, the MiraCosta Grounds Department and MiraCosta Horticulture Department.
