MiraCosta College Friends of the Library

presents

FORTUNE Magazine Senior Writer and Author

Marc Gunther

Friday, September 26 • 7:30 p.m.

Room 204 • San Elijo Campus
3333 Manchester Ave. • Cardiff

Admission is free.

Mr. Gunther joins Friends of the Library for this event after presenting the keynote address earlier in the day for MiraCosta College’s 2008 Business Leadership Conference. The all-day conference is presented by the college’s Business Department, the College Foundation and the MiraCosta College Women’s Advisory Committee.

Marc Gunther is a senior writer at FORTUNE Magazine.  He has written about corporate social responsibility, corporate governance and spirituality in the workplace, notably in a July 2001 cover story, “God and Business.”  Mr. Gunther joined FORTUNE in 1996 after a twenty-year career as a newspaper reporter with the Hartford Courant and the Detroit Free Press.  He is the author of The House That Roone Built and coauthor of Monday Night Mayhem, a book about ABC’s Monday Night Football that became a television movie.

Friday evening Mr. Gunther will discuss his latest book, Faith and Fortune:  How Compassionate Capitalism is Transforming American Business. Random House, publishers of Faith and Fortune, describe it as “not a book that explains how to run a company; instead, it’s about how to look at the world differently if you happen to be in a business in twenty-first-century America.  Important, inspiring, and timely, this is a book that is filled with ideas about how to change business for the better.”

MiraCosta College business instructors have made several chapters of the book required reading in their courses this fall and are excited that they and their students will have the opportunity to interact with Mr. Gunther at the Friends of the Library event. His book will be for sale at the event and Mr. Gunther will sign them following his talk.

Reactions to Marc Gunther’s Faith and Fortune:

  • "An enjoyably enlightening survey of socially responsible businesses...from its opening sentence…to its case that ethical commerce need not be unprofitable, the book upends preconceived notions. "
    Boston Globe
  • "Marc Gunther, a senior writer for FORTUNE magazine and the author of Faith and Fortune, is one of the few business writers who have recognized how global corporations can be influenced by progressive politics. "

Thomas L. Friedman, author of The World Is Flat

  • "Gunther’s journalistic skills sparkle, and his book is at its best as he relates the history of these corporations, splashing the accounts with facts and colorful anecdotes… Packed with compelling stories, it offers a much-needed, balanced look at the well-intentioned side of corporate America. "

Publishers Weekly

  • "Faith and Fortune is a statement about managerial courage in reconciling profit objectives with the greater good. The book provides compelling examples of people able to unravel the seemingly paradoxical relationship between personal faith and business leadership.  The book also captures the key role of faith in guiding strategic decisions.  Rather than a burden, the book demonstrates that faith is an essential attribute of leadership strength."

A graduate of Yale, Marc Gunther lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife, Karen Schneider, and their daughters, Sarah and Rebecca.  He can be reached at www.marcgunther.com
