MiraCosta College Art Instructor Wins Big in Film Competition

Randall Christopher

Randall Christopher, associate art instructor at MiraCosta College, has won the Florida Film Festival 2013 Grand Jury Award for Best Animated Short. Christopher directed and co-wrote Backyard Jam, a six-minute film featuring his skateboarding characters Kleeman and Mike.

Christopher, who has been enthralled with skateboarding since childhood, developed the characters of Kleeman and Mike nearly 15 years ago as a panel comic and now with his co-writer Andy Davis, the comic has evolved into film shorts that have gone viral online. Backyard Jam took approximately eight months to make and was partially financed through the online funding site Kickstarter.

“The film didn't make any money, but the cartoon led to a gig,” says Christopher. “We're now producing a web series called Skate Sketch for YouTube’s action sports network, Network A. That series will debut this summer.”

Christopher grew up in Florida, and received his bachelor’s degree at Florida State University. He then relocated to San Diego and completed his master of fine arts degree at UCSD in 2004. Christopher has taught art at MiraCosta College for more than eight years.

As for the future of Kleeman, Mike and Backyard Jam, Christopher says, “I'll be submitting to more festivals this year and hopefully it'll do well.”
