SPARTANS KEEP IMPROVING

In the last two weeks the Spartans earned a 22 point victory versus the 14th ranked team in the South and then they went on to a 2-1 record in the El Camino Tournament beating the tournament host and Moorpark College both by double digits. In the finals of the tournament MiraCosta ran into Fresno City College, ranked 12th in the State, and after trailing by just two at half, just didn't have enough to finish the game. The Spartans have received exceptional play from freshman Buddha Boyd and sophomore Fareed Ahmed.

FORMER SPARTAN HONORED WITH ACADEMIC/ATHLETIC AWARD

Matt Cain was the MVP and team captain for MiraCosta men's basketbal team in 2011.  While he competed as a Spartan he embodied many, if not all of the traits that MiraCosta Athletics strives to instill in the student-athletes with whom we work. To anyone that knows him, it will come to them as no surprise that he is still being showered with recognition and awards.  In the 2011-12 season Cain was selected as one of 24 students-athletes in the CCAA as a recipient of the Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award

While competing at CSU Dominguez Hills Cain also earned his way onto the CCAA All-Academic team (2011-2012, 2012-2013), captained the team his senior year and maintained a 4.0 over the two years studying there.

DOUBLE OVERTIME BUZZER BEATER FINISHES COMETS (Feb 9th, 2013)

It was a hard fought forty minutes. Then it was a hard fought two overtime periods, but as the clock expired the MiraCosta Spartans scored their final basket beat the Palomar Comets 77-76.  MiraCosta (16-9, 7-2) is now tied for first place in the Pacific Coast Conference with three games remaining.

Freshman Lawrence Chamberlain made the game winning basket. Click here to see the shot.  The Spartans were led in scoring by Baptiste Boucharel (24 points) but also had support from Chamberlain (18 points) and Dominique Moreno (17 points).  Declan Daly added 17 rebounds and 7 blocks in a dominant defensive effort.  Below are the current standings for the PCAC men's basketball.
