We have volunteer opportunities in all of these programs and the administrative office. Volunteer Needs: Assist teachers in K-5th grade classrooms, duties include making copies, helping students, grading, helping with art, music, science, and other small group instruction. Students can also help create/implement educational games, activities, etc. Bilingual students can provide translation help in the classroom. Hours are Mon., Tues., Wed., & Fri. from8:15-2:30 and Thursdays from 8:15-1:15. Must complete a volunteer application (available in the Poinsettia office) and obtain a TB test.

Project REACH

Volunteer Needs: Project REACH is a free afterschool youth development program for youth. We focus on prevention, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy. We are in need of college volunteers to assist with tutoring, prevention curriculum, after school activities, and serve as a mentor to the youth. Students must attend mandatory orientation/training, commit to 50 hours (2 hrs/week), background check (livescan), TB and drug test. Costs will be covered by the Vista Community Clinic.

REINS - Therapeutic Riding Program

Volunteer application must be completed and background check required; fee for background check is waived if volunteers agree to 20 hours commitment.

Volunteer Needs: In the preschool setting volunteers will assist teachers in preparing classroom environments, implementing curriculum plans, and working with children constructively while they play. In the kindergarten setting, volunteers will work one-on-one with students who are in need of special attention during class time, with an emphasis in fine motor skills and early pre-math and reading. Hours vary by day and grade setting. All volunteers must present proof of current TB (not older than 4 years) and must obtain a background and fingerprinting check, processed through "Choice Point" and paid by St. Mary Star of Sea.

Volunteer Needs: Help care for children at the transitional house while parents are in classes, counseling, etc. Assist with playing with the children, reading to them, giving snacks, etc. Hours are: 1st and 3rd Monday (6:30-8pm), Wed. 5:30pm-7:30pm, Thursdays (6:30-7:30pm - dates may vary) & Sat. 10am-12pm. Volunteer requirements: criminal background check (cost is $34), and volunteers must complete an application and interview process and submit a monthly time sheet.
