ATB - Ability To Benefit Information
Students without a high school diploma or its equivalent who are planning to apply for financial aid will need to have an Ability to Benefit determination made before any Federal financial aid can be awarded. The Ability to Benefit determination can be made by taking the computerized ACCUPLACER ATB test at the MiraCosta College Oceanside campus Testing Office. The ATB has three sections that are taken in one sitting: Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills and Arithmetic. Accommodations can be provided; please inform the Testing department of your need for accommodations at time of scheduling. The test is taken on a computer in the MiraCosta College Oceanside campus Testing department and is given by appointment only.
The ATB test is untimed, and may take two or more hours to complete. You will need to bring your referral form from the Financial Aid office and acceptable photo identification to your ATB testing appointment. If you are not a current MiraCosta College student, a credit class application must be submitted to the Admissions Office before testing.

Please call or visit the Testing office and ask to make an appointment to take the ATB test. The office is located in building 3300, room 3334. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
- ATB Examinees must be at least 18 years old before the start of the semester for which they wish to eceive aid
- Valid Photo ID from the following list: (MiraCosta College Student ID card, California Driver’s License or California State ID card, High school ID card from a San Diego county high school, High school yearbook with an individual photo of student and student’s full name, ID card from another community college or post-secondary institution, Military ID card, Passport).
- A referral from the Financial Aid office is required to take the ATB exam
