Instructor notes: This is a fully online class, with no in-person meetings. Assignments are released and due each week; the course is not self-paced. The course begins on Monday, August 18 and ends on December 13; it is a full-semester course. The instructor will open the course in Blackboard for preview approximately one week before the start of the semester so that students can access the syllabus, view the class schedule, and become familiar with the structure of the class. Please check your email the week before the semester starts, or at the very latest on the first day of class. If you do not receive an email about the class, please check your spam folder or check the "Announcements" area of the course site in Blackboard so you can get important information about how to get started in the class. Textbook information for this class is available at the MiraCosta College bookstore website. The text is Child, Family, School, Community: Socialization and Support by Roberta Berns (9th Edition). As can be seen on the bookstore website, students can buy the text new or used, or rent it new or used. Digital versions of the text are also available. The first chapter of the text can be accessed for free online on the CourseSmart website if you want to see if the digital version is of interest to you. You will need a text to succeed in this course. There are ten copies of the text on reserve at the MiraCosta library if you cannot afford to purchase your own text. Or you can apply for a text through MiraCosta's Textbook Loan Program, or check with the Financial Aid office to see if you are eligible for any of their services. The tests are all based on the 9th edition, but if you cannot afford the 9th edition the 8th edition is better than having no text. (The instructor has included the page numbers for both the 8th and 9th editions in the lecture and Discussion Board questions, but students would need to compare the 8th edition against what is in the 9th edition to prepare for the tests.) Enjoy previewing the text. It is worth getting it ahead of time to ensure your success in the class. I look forward to learning with you this semester!
