Science and Math for Young Children

This course provides teachers with knowledge and skills related to science and mathematics curriculum in early care and education settings. It focuses on understanding the ways in which children learn science and mathematics, the stages of children's cognitive development, the scientific process, content and standards of science and mathematics education, the teacher's role in the scientific process, and ways in which science and mathematics can be integrated across the early childhood curriculum.

There are several textbooks for the class. Details about the textbooks may be found at the MiraCosta College Bookstore website. The required textbook by Moomaw (2013) called _Teaching STEM in the early years: Activities for integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics_ (St. Paul: Redleaf Press) must be obtained as an ebook, hard copy text, or reviewed at the library as a reserve copy (a reserve copy at the Oceanside campus will be made available before the semester begins or early on in the semester). The remaining required publications are available through the State of California as free PDF's.

Note: You will need to be able to access the Preschool Learning Foundations and Preschool Curriculum Framework to succeed in this class. You can read these online, download them for free, purchase them at the bookstore, or use the copies on reserve in the library. If you want to purchase the texts, MiraCosta has a Textbook Loan Program for students who need assistance with textbooks. Also check with Financial Aid to see if you are eligible for any of their many services.
