Instructor notes: This is an ideal course for any student, especially for those who want to build their human resource management skills. These concepts and skills are applicable to those who are considering a career in human resources, but are also useful for anyone who will work in any aspect of business or management and wants to understand how a human resource department functions and its role in organizations. It is not open to students with credit in BUS117/HOSP 117. I bring to this course my experience as a Director in a large, publically traded multi-national company as well as my experience teaching Small Business Management. In this course you will receive a good overview of trends which affect the labor market, both locally and globally. You will engage in detailed study of specific labor law, job analysis, employee selection, performance appraisal, and employee training and development. We will also discuss theories and techniques of supervision, salary and benefits administration, employee motivation, and union relations. Our work in this course will expand your understanding of the business world and provide you with helpful insights for employment decisions, both personally and professionally. This is NOT a self-paced class. There will be weekly homework assignments and written analyses due throughout the semester. I look forward to embarking on this journey with you!
