Companion Planting with Tomatoes
Companion planting is the ancient technique of planting different crops in close proximity that can provide benefits to each other. Below are some of the plants we are offering in the plant sales nursery for companion planting with Tomatoes.
Marigolds repel nematodes, tomato worm, slugs, and general garden pests. The genus Tagetes is well known for its qualities to repel garden pests. They produce a substance called alpha-terthienyl, which helps reduce root-knot nematodes in the soil. The pungent odor can also help confuse other insect pests. Till marigolds into the soil at season end to deter nematodes further.
Basil repels whiteflies, mosquitoes, spider mites, aphids, hornworms. Improves pollination - attracts bees. Improves tomato health. Improves tomato flavor. Growing tomatoes and basil together increases the vigor and flavor of both crops. Plant 3 basil per tomato for best coverage.
Chives repel aphids. Tasty in salads. Members of the onion family are beneficial to plant with many types of crops due to the pungent odor they emit. This helps deter many insect pests.
Parsley attracts hover flies (which feast on tomato pests). Parsley excels at repelling harmful insects and attracting beneficial ones.
Leaf lettuce (and other leafy greens) in the same container as tomatoes acts as living mulch, which helps keep the soil cooler, and reduces the chances of spreading diseases from water and soil splashing on the leaves.
For many decades in certain parts of the old world it has been the practice to grow marigolds to repel pests on tomatoes. It has also been found that the tomatoes grow better and bear more fruit with marigolds around them. How effective companion planting is in the garden is up for debate. But what isn’t up for debate is that many of the recommended plants are easy to grow. Growing these and other recommended plants alongside your tomatoes increase your overall garden harvest.
