Emerging Leaders Workshop Descriptions
Welcome to ELI
Students will receive an official welcome to the Emerging Leaders Institute and an orientation as to how the institute works. Students will learn about how to engage via Zoom and in the Canvas site.
Leadership Styles
Students will learn about leadership styles, a brief overview of how leadership has shaped the history of community colleges, and why leadership in community is critical. Students will reflect on their own leadership styles and identify a community that they are a part of where they wish to contribute or help advocate for change. Students will also learn about ELI alumni and their successes!
Strengths
This workshop will introduce students to their own strengths and explore how their strengths serve as assets when it comes to different leadership styles. Students will reflect on how their strengths show up in various ways and learn how to use their strengths to work more effectively with others. Students will then start to think about how their strengths can play a role in their communities where they wish to contribute or help advocate for change.
Leadership & Life Balance
Leadership can be a demanding experience and often challenges individuals both personally
and professionally. This workshop will help participants learn how to balance life's
obligations through self-care techniques. Students will think about how they can self-care
while activating their strengths in their communities.
Ethical Decision Making
This workshop will discuss strategies to practicing values-driven leadership through
identifying the difference between what a leader may want to do verses what a leader
should do. Through case studies, scenarios, discussion and debate, techniques for
handling very difficult and ambiguous situations will be explored. Students will begin
to think about what ethical dilemmas they may encounter within their own communities.
Community & Goal Setting
Leadership requires the individual to envision a different reality for themselves
and their communities and establish goals to achieve that vision. In this workshop,
students will learn about the importance of community and how to engage community
in order to achieve a goal. This workshop will also explore techniques in goal setting
and identify their goals for how they plan to contribute or help advocate for change
within their community.
Time Management
Being able to juggle a busy schedule is a fundamental skill of leadership. This workshop
will help you identify priorities, time-wasters, and give you time management tools
which will help you get organized and utilize your time more effectively so you can
accomplish your goals. Students will think about how to manage their time and make
progress on their SMART goals.
Leadership & Diverse Communities
Successful leaders understand and educate themselves on changing demographics within
the community, the nation, and the world. This session will explore the contribution
that a diverse community may have in your personal interactions with others and our
organization. You will also be challenged to re-examine your personal values and beliefs,
and discover stereotypes and biases that you may hold. The workshop will help students
develop an appreciation of difference and underscore the richness that diversity can
bring to a group or organization.
Creating Networks (Be Your Own Brand)
Developing networks and creating alliances with others is an important skill for
leaders, both on campus and in the community. In this workshop you will learn effective
approaches to building personal and work-related relationships as well as discuss
ways to break down many of the perceived barriers between campus organizations or
community organizations. It will also help students to see the importance of reaching
out to others as allies in their desires to use their strengths within their communities
to contribute or advocate for change.
Communication & Conflict Resolution
In this session students will identify strengths and weaknesses of your personal communication
style, and learn techniques to resolve conflict within your group. Students will
also examine communication barriers and how you can effectively navigate through them
in order to improve communication lines within your group or organization.
Teamwork & Collaboration
Teamwork is more than wearing the team uniform. Teamwork is the fusion of different
elements into a powerful goal-oriented force. This workshop will discuss the group
formation process and how it evolves over time. The session will explore how individual
differences between group members can be a strength instead of a weakness. Techniques
and principles of effective collaboration will also be presented.
Share Out Learning/ Student Presentations
Students will post creative reflections to share what they have learned from being
part of ELI and present their learnings to the cohort. These reflections might include
creative expression through art, song, poetry, PowerPoint presentation, graphic design,
or any form of expression that highlights the learning and impact that the student
made when activating their strengths and leadership styles within their community.
Students will then respond to each other's posts on the discussion board to celebrate
one another's success!
