One of nation’s top volleyball coaches signs with MiraCosta College
For Immediate Release
OCEANSIDE – MiraCosta College has recruited one of the nation’s top high school volleyball coaches to lead its women’s team. Kristen Wright is being tasked with renewing a program that has been on hiatus since 1992.
“I want to build a championship program and I want to build a reputable program where the kids are cared for as people on and off the court,” Wright said. “I think we can help build a really great culture here.”
The American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2012 named Wright among the top 30 coaches in the country who are under 30 years old, and she has led her teams to CIF championships every year she has been a high school coach.
Wright coaches at the San Marcos-based SoCal Volleyball Club and had been the head girls’ volleyball coach at Tri-City Christian School in Vista since 2006. Prior to joining the Tri-City Christian staff, Wright was the head junior varsity coach for the girls’ squad at Santa Fe Christian School in Solana Beach, and was the interim assistant varsity coach when it captured a league, CIF and state championship in her first year there. She also served as a varsity assistant coach at La Jolla High School.
“We are really, really excited about having Coach Wright, not only because she’s a wonderful volleyball coach, but she’s also a master of developing a positive team culture that results in the successful development of fine human beings who are good students and have a positive impact in the community,” said Patrick Conahan, MiraCosta College’s director of athletics and intramurals.
“We are really lucky to have her.”
MiraCosta’s indoor volleyball program has been in mothballs since 1992, but Wright says the team will be competitive in its first season back this fall. Wright, a resident of Oceanside, has been busy recruiting since she her first day on the job Jan. 14. She figures the solid relationship she has built with high school programs in the region over the past decade will help her succeed.
