Ashley
Ashley is a first generation, formerly incarcerated, former foster youth, MiraCosta & PTK Alumni scholar. She is pursuing a BA in Sociology at CSUSM. She is a wife, mother, and an addict in recovery. Her mission is to abolish mass incarceration and help change the trajectory of others' lives through higher education, as well as breaking generational cycles of abuse, addiction, and trauma.
Chris
Christopher Burroughs is a formerly incarcerated student working towards an Environmental Sustainability degree at SDSU. He is focused on local agriculture. Christopher made an impact at MiraCosta College by maintaining a position on the President's List, becoming the VP of Scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa, and participating as a member of the Umoja equity group. He also was awarded several scholarships and received the honored Academic Medal of Merit. For Christopher, life is about giving back and being a bridge for those that are coming from similar backgrounds. As the founder of Garden 31 Community Initiative, a nonprofit organization, he works with marginalized populations teaching them life skills and providing training in organic farming. Today he lives a truly transformational life of service to his community.
Luis
Luis is a sociology major first-generation formerly incarcerated scholar. He grew up in Escondido, CA. He is interested in refusing and challenging the logics of the university and carceral state from an abolitionist perspective.
