Guest Speaker - Erica Alfaro
October 5, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
October 6, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Guest speaker, Erica Alfaro, addressed the CLC students about her adversities and success. Through her life experiences, Erica gained strength and resilience that propelled her to advocate for education and inspire all the students to pursue their educational and career goals. A former MiraCosta College student, Erica grew up in a poor family, moving from Fresno to Tijuana, and Oceanside. As a child, she worked for 12 hours a day in the tomato fields. Later, as a teenager, she found herself in an abusive relationship. One day, she had an epiphany: she recalled the long labor-intensive hours in the fields, and also her mother telling her that education is the key to a better life. Therefore, Erica committed to her goal of getting a degree. In 2019, Erica received her M.A. degree in Education from San Diego State University. To honor her parent’s sacrifices of coming to this country to give her a better life, she had her graduation pictures in the field where they worked so hard. Those pictures went viral and her story was shared around the world.
