Space for everyone.

The Project

MiraCosta College has battled one surprisingly persistent challenge—people keep giving us space where we don’t need it. Literally. Our name is MiraCosta, one word, no space. Yet it’s been misspelled everywhere: on community signage, in local newspapers, in online listings, and even by high school counselors—the very people who send students our way.

“Space for Everyone” is a short film created in-house by MiraCosta College’s Public Information Office. At first, it was designed as a playful PSA to teach the community how to spell our name correctly. But once we started writing, shooting, and editing, something greater emerged.

The film uses humor and heart to deliver a message that resonated deeply. MiraCosta has space for everyone: big, small, loud, quiet, first-gen, returning, wandering, and wondering. Everyone belongs. We just don’t have space in our name.

Starring a student leader from our Associated Student Government, the film was produced by our internal team, showcasing the strength and creativity of an in-house college communications department. What began as a branding fix turned into a celebration of community, identity, and inclusivity.

The response from the public has been overwhelming. Viewers shared personal stories, thanked us for the clarity, and admitted that they’d been spelling our name wrong for years. The video corrected a misconception and built an unexpected bridge of connection.

A history of misspellings.

Circa 1968, highway signage.

Members of the college newspaper staff painted proofreader's marks on the sign to indicate the correct spelling. A new sign was put up six months later along the highway 78.
