Oceanside LIFE
Oceanside LIFE Calendar organized for the seniors in North San Diego County and sponsored by The MiraCosta College Foundation. Open to all, age 18 and above. Most members are retired seniors meets on most Friday afternoons from 1-3:30 p.m. Meetings offer discussion groups and guest speakers. Field trips, lunches, and other activities may occur at other times members have use of the college.
We are currently meeting in the Temporary Board Room Trailer (T200) near the police
station on the Oceanside Campus. There is parking nearby.
We are not currently charging a membership fee. Come join us! LIFE members are friendly
people and always welcome new members.
San Elijo LIFE
San Elijo LIFE is organized for residents of San Diego County and is free and open to all members of the public. The group meets during the academic school year (September through May) on the third Friday of the month from 1-2:30 p.m. (lectures) and 1-3:00 p.m. (films) at the San Elijo Campus at 3333 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff, CA 92007 in the 200 Building, room 204.
At San Elijo LIFE, there is always something new and interesting with film offerings and guest speakers on a range of topics. Plan to join us!
Participants are also welcome to obtain a Patron Card for use at the on-campus MiraCosta College Library.
Fall 2023 - upcoming Events
Friday, October 20, 2023, 1-2:30 p.m. Lecture: San Elijo Lagoon Restoration: A 35-Year Vision for a Revived Wetland. Nature Collective’s Executive Director and Principal Scientist Doug Gibson will share the many successes of the newly restored San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, including how Nature Collective, an Encinitas-based nonprofit, obtained funding for this visionary project; how the lagoon’s healthier tidal channels are creating habitat for new species as sea levels rise; how more people are connecting via new trails; the impact on the coastal region, and the vision for the “Strawberry Fields,” soon to be Fields of the Future.
November 17, 2023, 1:00-2:30 p.m. Lecture: Robert Pacilio, It Was Never About the Books. Accomplished author and an award-winning teacher in San Diego, uses rock ‘n roll lyrics and films to help students unlock the power and mystery of literature. In his latest book, It Was Never About the Books, he shares vignettes of students who touched his heart, and whose paths he, in turn, changed inexorably. Bob will talk about the process of transitioning from teaching to writing and share examples of his work. Books will be available for sale.
December 15, 2023, 1:00-3:00 pm. Foreign Film: Babette’s Feast, Danish with English subtitles, 1987, PG. This simple and unpretentious film will reawaken your senses and fill you with a great feeling and a belief in the generosity of spirit. Two elderly maiden sisters hire a French refugee, Babette, as their cook. Babette gives the sisters, and their austere village neighbors, the pleasure of a sumptuous French dinner and a magic evening that they will never forget.
All events will be shown at the San Elijo Campus of MiraCosta College, 3333 Manchester Ave, Cardiff, CA 92007, room 204. Free admission & free parking in student spaces only (the unmarked spaces) in the SAN-1 & SAN-2 parking lots in front of the 200 Building.
