December 9 at 9:35 AM: High Wind Alert and Potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs (Student email)

Dear MiraCosta Students,

In an abundance of caution, we are contacting you today to inform you of weather conditions that may impact our region. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for San Diego County, effective from Monday morning through early Wednesday morning, due to anticipated moderate to locally strong Santa Ana winds and very low relative humidity (National Weather Service).

SDG&E has notified the college of possible grid shutdowns over the next two days to high winds to mitigate wildfire risks. While there are no current power outages in our service area, these conditions elevate the risk of wildfires and may cause power disruptions affecting over 100,000 homes in the region (SDG&E Website).

With finals week commencing, we understand the importance of uninterrupted preparation and completion of your exams. Please note that each faculty member may handle this situation differently depending on the needs of their specific course.

What You Should Do:

  • Listen to Your Instructor: Your instructor will provide guidance specific to your course, including any adjustments or accommodations. Make sure to monitor your email, Canvas, or other communication channels regularly.
  • Be Prepared: If your home is affected by a power outage, the college is exploring options to provide spaces where you can prepare for and complete your finals. Details about available campus facilities will be shared soon.
  • Stay Informed: Stay updated on weather conditions by checking reliable sources like the National Weather Service (weather.gov) and SDG&E. MiraCosta College will post updates atmiracosta.edu/alerts.

Your safety and academic success remain our top priorities. Please take necessary precautions for your home and family and remain flexible. Contact your instructor or the appropriate college support services for assistance if you encounter challenges.

We appreciate your resilience and dedication as we navigate these challenges together.

Stay safe, and good luck with your finals!
