Several communities in San Diego County have been impacted by recent fires and widespread power outages, with many more potentially affected by ongoing weather conditions. MiraCosta College is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, employees, and the broader community.

If you are directly impacted, we encourage students to contact their instructors to discuss any challenges or accommodations needed. Employees should reach out to their supervisors for support.

As always, the safety and well-being of our students, employees, and their families remain our top priority. To support you during this time, MiraCosta College is offering the following resources and services:

For Students and Employees:

  • Study Areas and Wi-Fi Access: Quiet study spaces, group study areas, and Wi-Fi access are available at all MiraCosta College campuses.
  • Device Charging: Designated charging stations are set up in the Learning Commons and open campus spaces for laptops, phones, and other devices.
  • Showers and Laundry Facilities: Showers and laundry facilities are accessible at Building 5200 on the Oceanside Campus. Showers are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and laundry facilities are available Monday–Thursday, 8–10 a.m. and 3–9 p.m., and Friday, 8–10 a.m.

  • Emotional Support and Counseling: Counseling services are available to support those experiencing emotional stress due to the fire. Please contact Student Support Services for more information.

For Faculty:
We recognize the significant challenges many of our students face due to the weather. We encourage all faculty members to remain flexible and accommodating with students during this time. This may include:

  • Granting extensions on assignments or rescheduling exams as needed.
  • Providing alternative ways for students to participate or complete coursework if they are displaced or without power.
  • Being understanding and supportive as students navigate these challenges.

Additionally, as it is the first week of classes, we remind faculty to review class rosters and drop any students who have not attended or engaged. This ensures course rosters are accurate and allows waitlisted students the opportunity to enroll. Faculty are encouraged to follow up with students who appear as no-shows to confirm their status before making drops.
