MiraCostans Make a Difference in Our Community
English Instructor Erica Duran, with MiraCosta College Adult High School, reached out to share about a volunteer project that was recently started by MiraCosta Associate Faculty Syndee Wood.
Syndee and a friend had an idea to donate one night’s worth of dinner to the ICU at Scripps Encinitas Hospital back in December 2020. "Once her Facebook friends and others got wind of it, they began contributing like crazy, and this thing snowballed quickly," notes Erica. "She’s now several weeks into this thing and has raised over $10,000 and donated nightly meals for nearly a month."
Erica added, "Syndee has been ordering the food from various locally owned restaurants in an effort to support small businesses during the pandemic." This good idea grew quickly, involving volunteers, drivers, and inspired other MiraCostans to set up similar meal donations at other local hospitals over the winter break.
Thank you Syndee and all the MiraCosta volunteers for helping frontline workers and small businesses in the North County.

I am in one of the toughest semesters of my college career this semester and one of my biggest challenges has been calculus. I am in a Math 115 class and my teacher always encourages us to schedule MLC appointments or drop in when we are in need of additional help.
I have utilized this extremely helpful and convenient resource multiple times this semester and I always walk away with a positive attitude. The coaches and tutors are always friendly and super insightful.
On Tuesday, I visited the Math Learning Center and had coach Marlesha's help with a couple calculus problems. I expressed my gratitude for the Math Learning Center to her and she encouraged me to send in my feedback.
I'd like to begin by saying this resource has been instrumental to my success in Math 115. I have an awesome teacher who is always willing to offer additional help to students. Although he always finds a way to offer some of his time outside of class, I know he has a life of his own, as well as many other students that he is working with. It has been very convenient to drop in to the MLC for some on-demand help outside of my class-time.
I have an incredibly busy work schedule and have benefited greatly from the extended hours that the MLC has offered. Sundays also happen to be my only day off of work, so having the MLC open on Sundays has helped me out a lot. Not to mention, it has been very convenient to have the MLC online and if this option is still available even when physical classes resume, I will definitely utilize it. I was talking to coach Marlesha about how convenient it is to just log on to Zoom, check in, and receive help quickly. I also like that tutors can easily annotate the screen while I'm working on the problems. I believe that this tool will also help lower the anxiety of students who are nervous about asking for help by providing private and personal assistance. It is nice to pop in, be placed into your own breakout room, and receive personal help without having to commute to campus.
I appreciate all of the resources that MiraCosta has provided to help aid in their students' success. I hope this feedback provides you with good information for the Math Learning Center. Thanks again and I look forward to working with your tutors and coaches for the remainder of the semester!
