Transform Your Experience into College Credit
At MiraCosta College, we recognize that valuable college-level learning occurs both inside and outside the traditional classroom. Through our Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program, students can earn college credit for knowledge and skills acquired through various experiences, accelerating their educational journey and reducing costs.
What is Credit for Prior Learning?
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is college credit awarded for validated college-level skills and knowledge gained outside of a college classroom. Students’ knowledge and skills might be gained through experiences such as
- Military training
- Industry training
- State or federal government training
- Apprenticeships, internships, work-based learning, or other industry-based experiential learning
- Validated volunteer and civic activities (e.g., Peace Corps)
Note: CPL does not include knowledge and skills already assessed and awarded credit through formal education at regionally accredited institutions.
Benefits of CPL
- Accelerate Your Education
Earn your degree or certificate faster by receiving credit for what you already know. - Save Money
Reduce the cost of your education by eliminating the need to take courses covering material you have already mastered. - Validate Your Experience
Gain formal recognition for the skills and knowledge you've acquired through work, military service, or other experiences.
