Steps for completing Service Learning
Step 1: Register for service learning through the Service Learning Registration Form
Once students have registered through this form, they will receive an email confirmation with an overview of the service learning steps and the required service learning paperwork attached.
Step 2: Contact a community partner to do service learning hours
If students haven't already, we encourage them to contact the community partner organization they wish to do their service learning with, prior to completing step three. To locate the contact information and volunteer needs for organizations, please visit our community partner webpage. Keep in mind, some organizations may require students to complete a volunteer application, background check, and/or an orientation, therefore it may take some time before students can begin your hours. For guidance on what to say when contacting a community partner, students can use the Phone/Email Template linked below. When communicating with the community partner, we recommend sharing the days/times students would be available to do their service hours, how many hours they were assigned to do, and asking what service opportunities community partners currently offer. If students do not hear back from an organization within 48 hours, we recommend following up with another email or phone call. If students haven't heard back after following up, email us at servicelearning@miracosta.edu.
Step 3: Complete the Agreement Form
If after talking with an organization, a student determines that it's a good fit for their schedule and service learning requirement, they should confirm that they would like to do their service learning hours with the community partner and proceed to complete the Agreement Form. The Agreement Form serves as the service learning 'contract' and must be completed and signed prior to beginning their service learning hours. Most of the form can be filled out by the student and will need to be signed by a community partner representative. The form can be completed and signed online using the free Adobe Fill & Sign app, or be signed in person at the organization (must schedule a time to visit the organization to complete the agreement form). After the form is completed and signed by the student and the community partner representative, it must be submitted to the Service Learning & Volunteer Center via email (servicelearning@miracosta.edu) or in-person (OC3306, next to Admissions & Records).
Step 4: Document service learning hours on the Time Sheet and get hours signed off by community partner representative
After the Agreement Form is completed and signed, a student has completed the organization's volunteer requirements, and has determined their service schedule, the student can begin to do their service learning hours with the organization. To document their service learning hours, students must use the Time Sheet (linked below). If students are unable to print the Time Sheet at home, they can stop by our center (room 3306) to pick up a physical copy, or they can download it to their device to complete through the free Adobe Fill & Sign app. After they complete the service learning hours assigned by their professor and document the hours on the Time Sheet, students must receive a signature from the community partner representative. The student must submit a copy of their Time Sheet to our center via email or in person. If a student completes at least 15 service learning hours, a certificate will be automatically processed after the semester concludes and mailed directly to the student's mailing address.
Step 5: Ask community partner representative to complete a Student Evaluation (Optional)
If students would like to receive feedback from the organization regarding the service work they did, they are welcome to provide the Student Evaluation (linked below) to the person who supervised their service learning hours. Students have used this feedback towards their resume or when applying to jobs & scholarships. Note that on the form, the community partner representative can nominate students for a service learning award. Our Service Learning Advisory Board will review the nominations and select 3-5 students from Summer 2024, Fall 2024, and Spring 2025 semester. Students selected will be invited to attend our End of the Year Celebration of Service, and will receive a gift card or gas card.
Step 6: Complete Program Evaluation
We ask all service learning students to complete our Program Evaluation (linked below) after completing their service learning assignment. We greatly appreciate any feedback regarding our program because it helps us improve and make changes when needed.
