Take MiraCosta College Credit Courses to Satisfy Adult High School Diploma Requirements
Adult High School (AHS) credits may be earned by completing college coursework. Below are the AHS credit requirements and the MiraCosta college courses that meet those requirements. A three-unit college course is equivalent to ten AHS school credits (1 unit=3.33 credits). Eligible courses are based upon the 2014-15 college catalog.
ENGLISH (40 credits required; a maximum of 20 credits in ESL.)
- Any English, ESL, American College English, Communication, and Reading course except 292, 296, 298, 299.
MATHEMATICS (30 credits required)
- Any Math course except 292, 296.
SCIENCE (20 credits required and must include a biological and physical science.)
- Life Science: Anthropology 101, 190; any Biology course except 180, 292, 296, 298, 299; Horticulture 116; Psychology 260.
- Physical Science: Astronomy 101, 120, 201; any Chemistry course except 292, 298; Earth Science 106; Geography 101; Geology 101, 120; Horticulture 115; Oceanography 101; Physical Science 101, 106, 108; any Physics course except 292, 298.
UNITED STATES HISTORY (10 credits required)
- U.S. History 110, 111, 141, 142, 145, 146. History 116 and 117 will not meet this requirement.
NOTE: A full year sequence of U.S. History 110/111; 141/142; 145/146 will satisfy the diploma requirement for U.S. History (10 credits), American Government (5 credits), and Economics (5 credits).
AMERICAN GOVERNMENT (5 credits required)
- Political Science 101, 102.
ECONOMICS (5 credits required)
- Economics 100, 101, 102.
WORLD HISTORY (10 credits required)
- World History 100, 101. Only 5 high school credits will be awarded for Geography 101, 102, 104.
HUMANITIES (10 credits required)
- Art: any course except 292, 295, 296, 298, 299. Only 5 credits will be granted for Art 245.
- Dance: any course except 292, 296, 298, 299.
- Dramatic Arts: any course except 292, 296, 298, 299.
- Film: 101, 106, 110.
- Foreign Languages: any course except 292, 296, 298, 299.
- Humanities: 101, 250, 251.
- Literature: any course except 292, 296, 298.
- Music: any course except 292, 296, 298.
- Philosophy: any course except 292, 296, 298.
ELECTIVES (40 credits required)
All courses may be used for elective credits except for athletics (ATHL) and the kinesiology (KINE) courses that do not include lecture hours. Only kinesiology courses that include lecture hours are eligible for AHS elective credits. However, all MiraCosta credit courses may be used to satisfy the AHS residency requirement.
